Cattery Set Up

When you enter into the field of cat breeding you think how much space can a few cats take? Well, I must say they take a lot more space than one would think. I am an empty nester with a large home that was begging to be repurposed! Of course most of my cats have full access to my home much of the time... but as each reaches breeding age their movement requires some management.

My former 200 square foot  office is now the kitten, delivery and post natal care room, equipped with incubators and a birthing suite. I collect and use baby bassinets for my mom's and their tiny, new kittens. New moms can easily get in and out, while the bassinets are easy to switch out bedding on the mattresses,  so there are no kittens getting caught up and suffocated in loose bedding.  At about 3 weeks, the new family graduates to their cat cabin where the kittens are better contained as each becomes more mobile. Mom still has open access to come and go until about 5 to 8 weeks when she will begin to wean and litter train her youngsters. A litter box with pine pellets, water and kitten food are provided at all times with easy access. By 8 weeks the Moms visit but are happy that their kittens are virtually independent. The kittens are very playful at this point and are free to enjoy the cat tree and other play areas in the kitten room.

The 300 square foot formal dining room is now the Queens' Room where they lounge in the big windows and enjoy the wildlife that live in the forest surrounding our home. They also enjoy sitting in the large cat tree and chatting with me while I am cooking their dinner or doing dishes. Away from the Kings!

The 360 square foot front room with windows on three sides is a wonderful environment for expectant Queens. As shown in several of the photos we added washable, cushy cushion covers...this makes clean up a breeze!

Our large 300 square foot balcony off the kitchen has been screened and converted into a very large catio with a heated cat room for new arrivals and any quarantine situations that may arise. This area proved so beneficial to the cats we made the desision to expand the catio areas by adding an additional 400 square feet of catio space with exterior litter areas, a tunnel bridge over the koi pond and a bridge to the cat treehouse in the nearby red maple tree. This tree is full of items that interest and stimulate the cats, such as: hummingbird and regular bird feeders, hammocks for snoozing, brightly painted gourds for swatting, limbs for climbing and posts for scratching. We just keep coming up with new ideas!
